About Biophilia

Biophilia -noun, bi·o·phil·i·a (bi’ō-fĭl’ē-ə, -fēl’yə)

The term “biophilia” literally means “love of life or living systems.” It was coined by Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson in 1984 in his book of the same name to describe a psychological orientation of being attracted to all that is alive and vital. Wilson suggests that biophilia describes the connections that human beings subconsciously seek with the rest of life and the tendency to affiliate with life and lifelike processes. A biophile is anyone who aligns themselves consciously with the principles of biophilia. Biophile Music is a creative expression of these tendencies through sound, music, and the spoken word.

Nature and natural processes more often than not unfold in a time frame very different than the one we inhabit as humans. Modern life compels us to ever quickening frenzies of consumption and need. On the other hand organic life has everything that it needs to unfold in an unhurried pace and in a fulfilling way. Biophile music invites the listener to slow down and inhabit a sense of time more attuned to life processes and the deep connections found therein where we have opportunity to discover a more natural and fluid state of being.

Biophile music uses purposeful repetition in emulation of bio-rhythms and the cyclical patterns observed in ecosystems. One of the most intriguing elements of making music in this way is in it’s relationship to the ancient techniques of shamanism and other tribal practices that would encourage and help induce higher and un-ordinary states of consciousness. Underlying musical elements of each theme end up becoming predictable and as a result of that there is a gradual relaxation of our minds and bodies into a more receptive state of being. It is within this state that the collective energies of those present begin to combine and create what are termed emergent qualities in systems theory. These energies are always greater than the sum of its parts, and in the context of a Biophile performance are often experienced as a unifying, empowering, and resonantly healing force.

Each performance of Biophile Music is unique in it’s expression, and is a direct reflection on the individual nature of each audience, the context of the event, the location of the performance, and the time of year. Each segment or piece of the performance can be considered as an outline, with definitions of structure and intent, but with the innumerable details filled in every time in direct response to the energies present. You can think of it as a stew, where you have a list of ingredients that you know when put together will produce a delicious result, but the process of putting the ingredients together can vary every time, and the order in which they go in, and the mood you are in, and who you are going to be serving it for can quite easily make for a unique dish.

In response to the individual nature of every performance of Biophile Music, and as a chronicling of the evolution of the Biophile Music event in it’s own right, each concert is recorded live on state of the art high-def equipment, and is available for sale at the performance or online. If ordering online please have the specific date of the event you attended or desire a copy of ready.
